Basic information about 4G Technology

4G technology is also called the 4th generation of wireless communication technology after the 3G. It offers much more speed than 3G services. The services provided in 4th Generation communication systems are mobile web access, VOIP, IP telephony, Games on Demand, Cloud computing, and high definition video services. There are two 4th Generation systems currently deployed commercially they are

  1. WiMAX
  2. Long Term Evolution (LTE) or 4G.


Drawbacks of 3G

            As per 3G standards or IMT-200 standards 3G supports speed up to 2 Mbps for the stationary user which is very low in the data hungry market, the upload speed of the 3G is also low up to 1 Mbps. In considering the above facts LTE technology has emerged as an alternative to 3G, more over the cost difference between the 3G and LTE equipment is subtle providing better service to the customers.

4G speed and Spectrum details

 According to ITU-R, the standard rate of data for moving systems such as Car, Bus, and Train should support 100 Mbps and stationary users or low mobility users such as pedestrians should support 1000 Mbps/1Gbps. LTE Technology uses the frequency bands 800/1800/2600 wireless communications.

The frequency bands in detail are given below.

  1. 800 MHz (824to 844 MHz)  and (869-889 MHz)
  2. 1800 MHz (1710 to1785 MHz) and (1805-1880 MHz)
  3. 2600 MHz (2500-2570 MHz) and (2620-2690 MHz).


4G Service Providers in India

In India, BSNL operates WiMAX in selected circles such as West Bengal, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh and Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone, Idea are offering 4G services. Currently, service providers are concentrating on the major cities where data demand is very high. The services available in India cannot be called as 4G as according to the ITU-R standards it should support 1Gbps data rate for the stationary user. But due to the right data speed, the services offered by the service provider are above 3G standards.

How to access 4G service

Smartphone: To access it you need an LTE supportable Smartphone.

Dongle: If you want to use it on PC you just need a Dongle.

Wi-Fi hotspot: Telecom service providers are providing plug and play Wi-Fi spot equipment. More than one customer can access services through this device.

Wi-Fi Router: You may also use Wi-Fi Router to access 4G service. You can extend it to your home network using Router.

  4. Improved quality of service.



  1. At higher frequencies the coverage becomes small.
  2. You must have a 4G compatible handset.
  3. The Telecom service providers have to install more towers to provide enhanced features for customers.
  4. Costly.
